Shave the Energy Peak (STEP) program discontinuedWith rapid changes in technology, the Shave the Energy Peak (STEP) devices used to cycle off program participants' air conditioners in times of high power demand are outdated. Unfortunately, it became too difficult and expensive for MID to maintain these devices. As of April 2023, MID deactivated all devices and discontinued the STEP program. Monthly credit stoppedStarting June 2023, the $5 monthly credit STEP participants annually received June through September has stopped and is no longer reflected on electric bills. STEP device removalOver the next few years, we will be working to remove STEP devices throughout MID's service area. There is no appointment necessary, and you don't need to be home for MID to remove the STEP device connected to your air conditioner. The deactivated STEP device won't harm or interrupt use of your air conditioner. It can remain there until MID removes it. Our crews will leave a notice if they cannot access your air conditioner for the STEP device removal. If you remove your own STEP device, you can choose to dispose of it; return it to MID's office at 1231 11th Street, Modesto; or we can arrange to pick it up. MID is not responsible for damages if you choose to remove the device yourself or have it removed by someone other than MID. Power Smart - MID's new smart thermostat programMID has a new smart thermostat program - Power Smart - that includes similar incentives to the STEP program. If you own a smart thermostat, you may be eligible to participate and will receive a one-time $50 bill credit and if you remain on the program, you'll receive an additional $20 bill credit every year. Commercial & Industrial CustomersCommercial and industrial customers that participated in the STEP program may be eligible for MID's Interruptible Demand program. |
